But that empathy must be taught at a young age, if it is to grow in one's heart and mind. Teaching children about compassion and empathy early in life builds moral character, reduces violence, and creates a sense of empowerment and responsibility. When you teach a child to be kind to animals, you are helping pave the way to a brighter future for all living beings. . Meanwhile, please help by teaching children the following: A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS... - My life may last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
- Give me time to understand what you want of me.
- Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
- Don't be angry with me for very long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment, but I have only you.
- Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when you speak to me.
- Be aware that I will never forget the way you treat me.
- Before you hit me, remember that I could hurt you and yet I choose not to.
- Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Am I getting the right food? Have I been in the sun too long? Is my heart getting old or weak?
- Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
- Please come with me on the ultimate journey. Don't make me face this alone - even if it is hard for you to watch. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you ALWAYS!
