CANDi... saving the lives of stray cats and dogs through spay, neuter and adoption programs supported by the tourism industry, travelers and pet lovers.

The number of stray animals worldwide reaches into the hundreds of millions. This overpopulation problem exists largely due to social, cultural, and economic barriers to wide-spread spay/neuter compliance, but companion animal abandonment is also an issue. As puppies and kittens mature, they become harder to handle and less cute: many become pregnant, and many are abandoned as a result.

For countries that struggle to provide adequate resources for their human populations, allocating funding to the needs of their stray animal population is out of the question. Establishing and operating animal shelters is expensive, and such facilities would quickly exceed their capacity to house stray animals.

The best alternative is to establish spay/neuter clinics that provide low or no cost services to the public. CANDi has such a clinic in Cancun - known as the "Project Cancun" - with a full-time veterinarian and full-time animal care provider.

CANDi will use "Project Cancun" as a model to establish spay/neuter clinics in other communities across Mexico and the Caribbean.

You can find out how to help CANDi build more spay/neuter clinics at Get Involved.
